As hearing loss is a common ailment all over the world, it is stunning that so many folks would be embarrassed to wear a device that would help their condition. The very fact is, age isn’t an issue. Both the older and younger generations share these feelings. What they may not understand, however, is that the hearing aids of today are nothing like they used to be.
One of the oldest types of hearing aids is the BTE or the “behind the ear” style. It’s worn behind the ear and permits sound to travel from the case outside the ear to the actual mold that fits within the ear. Another older style is the ITE or “in the ear” style. Not a favorite among many users, this device actually surrounds the entire outer ear.
Next, there is the ITC or “in the canal” model. As it fits right into the ear, most folks will not even acknowledge that somebody is carrying one of these. But, this sort is often best for someone who is experiencing a mild hearing loss and can not work well with somebody with a more severe hearing impairment.
For those people suffering from severely decreased hearing loss, cochlear implants may be the most effective device to use. These are primarily listening devices that are implanted directly into the patient. A major downside to this device is that the user must undergo surgery for the implantation. While they’re not for those who are experiencing mild symptoms of hearing loss, they can open up an entire new world for those suffering from a more severe hearing disability.
When someone starts to experience the beginning stages of hearing loss, they’ll initially want to deny that there is anything wrong. It may be the fear of the unknown or they will feel embarrassed to require such a device. Thankfully, there are many options available to people who are hearing impaired and the new hearing aids of nowadays may not even be noticed by anyone else.
